Metal 'scores' in 2007 competition

T rinity Sports Complex, hockey arena at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., ‘iced’ the competition in the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association 2007 Building of the Year judging.
RJB Contracting, Inc., Torrington, Conn., in competition with contractors across the nation, took top honors for the project that also serves as an ice skating facility for the community. The $16 million, 46,157 sq. ft. facility includes a 200x90-foot ice rink with a 152-foot clear span, bleachers, offices and meeting rooms. A 9,800 sq. ft. mezzanine houses a mechanical room. Roofing includes a gable symmetrical roof over the main 36,480 sq. ft. section of the building, a reverse lean-to configuration over a 7,101 sq. ft. area and a single slope roof over a 2,576 sq. ft. section. Metallic Building Company structural and roof systems were utilized for the project, with wall panels from various suppliers, including Metecno/Morin, Metl-Span, Alucobond and Composite Wood. RJB Contracting, established in 1983, is a full-service contractor delivering buildings from the planning stages through to completion. The company has two divisions, concrete and metal buildings, and has been a Metallic Building Company dealer since 1990. In addition to its Building of the Year Award, MBCEA also announced Awards of Excellence and Awards of Merit in seven building categories – Aviation, Education, Manufacturing, Recreational, Religious, Specialty, and Warehouse. Winning entries by categories are: Aviation Award of Excellence — Schwob Building Company, Dallas, Texas, for the project C-5 Corrosion Control De-Paint & Paint Hangar, Robins AFB, Ga. Award of Merit – Metal Erectors, Inc., Ocala, Fla., for the Eclipse Aviation Factory Service Center, Gainesville, Fla. Education Award of Excellence – Crossland Construction Co., Columbus, Kan., for the Centerton Gamble Elementary School, Centerton, Ark. Award of Merit – Crossland Construction Co., Columbus, Kan., for the Delbert “Pete” and Pat Allen Elementary School, Siloam Springs, Ark. Manufacturing Award of Excellence – Metal Erectors, Inc., Ocala, Fla., for Cardinal Glass LG, Ocala, Fla. Award of Merit – Evans Building Company, Wichita, Kan., for Cullum & Brown, Wichita, Kan. Recreational Award of Excellence – RJB Contracting in Torrington, Conn., for the project Trinity Sports Complex, Hartford, Conn. Award of Merit – Northeast Structural Systems in Mount Eaton, Ohio, for the project Paramount Tennis in Medina, Ohio. Specialty Award of Excellence – MMG Construction in Arden, N.C., for the project Carolina Walk Pavilion, Columbia, S.C. Award of Merit – Dutton & Garfield, Inc. in Hampstead, N.H., for the project Black Tie Limousine Service in Haverhill, Mass. Religious Award of Excellence – Built Wright Construction in Lexington, S.C., for the project Crossroads Baptist Church of Gilbert in Gilbert, SC. Award of Merit – none given. Warehouse Award of Excellence – A.B. Systems in Rochester, Minn., for the project Schott Distributing Company. Award of Merit – Thomas Phoenix International. in Eastampton, N.J., for the project Blue Rock Const/Aquatic Garden & Koi in Eastampton, N.J.
