2008 Buildings of the Year Honorable Mention: Remick Properties

Built for Pat Remick of Remick Properties, this multi-use commercial building incorporates office space, a shop, warehouse and work areas. The owner, who runs a landscaping business, uses part of the building and leases the remainder to other businesses.

The most unique aspect to this building is the exterior finish, which is an “Exterior Insulation Finish System” or EIFS. The city was against the use of post-frame and the builder needed to provide officials with plans and examples of the building to assure them it would blend with other commercial projects in the area.

When the soil borings came up as questionable, a post-frame building with a floating slab was a perfect solution to assure the zoning and building inspector that the site would work. The City of Savage has very strict guidelines about what can be built in the city limits. The unique exterior of this building has opened the door for post-frame.
