I am impressed about this article, but yet, I want to research more about these facts.

Could you tell me where in the IBC 2006 that mentions about non-engineered buildings is valid on certain structures (such as agriculture)?

Thank you

David's article is right on the money.

After over three decades in the post frame industry, my personal observation is we are yet plagued by the not engineered "lumber yard kit", the builder who, "we've built them this way for years" and even the large "reputable" builders who provide non-engineered buildings which they claim to be "robust", however do not meet the code load requirements.

Even in building jurisdictions which require permits, do plan reviews and construction inspections - problems occur, or are caused by the building departments themselves. Many offer "prescriptive requirements" for non-engineered post frame buildings which are not code conforming, and in some cases could lead to catastrophic building failures.

The real solution is for every building, whether post frame or otherwise, to be designed by a registered design professional - specific to the building to be constructed, at the site the building is to be constructed at.
