Arkema launched Kynar Aquatec FMA (fluoropolymer-modified acrylic) resins, designed for compliant cool-roof coatings and protective topcoats for exterior building products. This innovative waterborne acrylic-modified PVDF fluoropolymer technology greatly extends the effective lifespan of solar reflective (cool) roof coatings and extends long-term weather protection and stay-clean properties for roofs and exterior building components.
Unlike traditional fluoropolymers, Kynar Aquatec FMA resins are supplied as aqueous latexes. Coatings formulated with Kynar Aquatec FMA latexes do not require baking and can thus be either field or factory applied.
Cool roofing has become an extremely important initiative in the global drive for energy conservation and environmental improvement. In the USA, the Obama administration has voiced its strong support for cool roofing. During a recent climate change symposium in London, US Energy Secretary Steven Chu commented that new research from the Berkeley Lab indicates that light-colored roofs could slow the rate of global warming, shifting temperature projections by as much as 11 years. Making roofs that stay white over the long term has been a big challenge, but a bright, weatherable surface is the inherent advantage of the Kynar Aquatec FMA resin technology.
This launch of Kynar Aquatec FMA resin, as the basis for water-based, cool-roof coatings, further demonstrates Arkema’s continued commitment to green technologies and sustainability. Arkema has also recently commercialized several innovative Kynar PVDF products for photovoltaic panels, wind turbine blades, and lithium ion batteries (for hybrid electric vehicles). “We see a very strong role for our new fluoropolymer technologies in several green-technology projects. We continue to drive our R&D efforts toward advancing these exciting markets," said Erwoan Pezron, global managing director of Arkema’s fluoropolymer business.
A global chemical company and France’s leading chemical producer, Arkema consists of three business segments: Vinyl Products, Industrial Chemicals, and Performance Products. Present in more than 40 countries with 15,000 employees, Arkema achieved sales of 5.6 billion euros in 2008. With its six research centers in France, the United States and Japan, and internationally recognized brands, Arkema holds leadership positions in its principal markets.
