Follansbee Steel TCS II tops a “Dream House” in Pittsburgh, PA, providing a long-lasting and sustainable roofing solution for homeowners Lou and Amy Weiss.
The home was designed by renowned architect Hugh Newell Jacobson in 1998 as part of an annual LIFE magazine feature. The Weiss family bought the plans after falling in love with the house’s clean look and contemporary lines. The house features barn like profiles with a large chimney and 45 degree roof lines.
The couple purchased a former brownfield slag dump in the city of Pittsburgh and after many years of zoning and legal issues, they were approved to begin building their “Dream House” in 2009.
“We met with Hugh Jacobsen and his son and asked what changes they would make to the original drawings. The first on their list was a standing seam metal roof,” explained Lou Weiss. “We researched manufacturers and discovered Follansbee Steel, which was produced nearby. Their TCS II roofing material meet our green building and design goals.”
The building, design and construction of the residence were planned in accordance with United States Green Building Council (USGBC) standards in order to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) requirements. The house is applying for LEED Platinum certification.
“We love the roof and it looks spectacular,” says Weiss. “It’s one of the main things people comment on when they visit the house.”
Follansbee Steel supplied the 5,300 square feet of TCS II featured on the pristine white structure. TCS II, a terne-coated stainless steel which features a variety of weather resistant, green and energy saving attributes, including long life expectancy and recycled content, was the ideal choice for the residence. The material requires no painting and is formulated to weather over time to a soft gray patina.
TCS II is coated with Follansbee’s patented ZT (zinc/tin) alloy, which provides unprecedented corrosion resistance and durability. TCS II has surpassed 30,250 hours of ASTM salt spray testing with no signs of red rust to date and requires little maintenance to keep its pristine look.
“The gabled roof is steep, but we found the installation with the Follansbee Steel materials to be straightforward,” shares Phil Johnson of General Construction Company of Colliers, WV, the installer of the roof. “I highly recommend Follansbee Steel to homeowners who want a maintenance free roof that will last a lifetime.”
The house sits high on a hill with panoramic views of the Monongahela River Valley. The site is part of the Beechwood Flats Conservation Area, an easement that has been donated by the homeowners to the North American Land Trust, which preserves views in perpetuity, protects natural wildlife and allows for a trailhead into Pittsburgh’s historic Frick Park.
Construction began in spring 2009 when there were no other LEED Platinum certified residences in the city of Pittsburgh and was completed in winter 2010. Other sustainable building elements in the home include cork and rubber flooring, rainwater harvesting, windmill power and energy-efficient spray foam insulation.
In addition to Follansbee Steel and General Construction Company, members of the project team included managing architect Seigle Solow & Horne, Pittsburgh, LEED certification and systems testing by Comfy House, Pittsburgh, structural engineer Watson Engineers, McMurray, Pa., civil engineer DGI Menard, Bridgeville, Pa., geotechnical engineer GeoMechanics, Inc., Elizabeth, Pa., landscape designer Dreher Garden Design, Butler, Pa., landscape design and site planning by Joel LeGall, Pittsburgh.
