How a roof is designed and what materials are used can increase the energy efficiency of a building and conserve environmental resources.
Samir Ibrahim, the director of design services for Carlisle SynTec, Inc., of Carlisle, Pa., and a leading expert on roof design, will demonstrate how roof membrane color, orientation, elevation and insulation levels can all heavily impact energy savings for the property owner, during his presentation at the 2009 RCI Symposium on Building Envelope Technology, October 26-27.

More than a dozen world-renowned experts in building design, repair and maintenance will introduce some of the industry’s newest advances in energy-saving technologies and other real world solutions during the two-day intensive workshop at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego.
The symposium is designed to explain building envelope advances and provide field-tested, practical applications to architects, engineers, contractors, facility managers and anyone involved with designing or maintaining new or existing buildings.
Programming will educate attendees to the latest techniques in constructing, rehabilitating and maintaining aging as well as modern structures; provide insight into must-do energy saving projects; and examine recent structural investigations and failures within the building envelope arena.

Dr. Bill Mansell, managing director of Chadwick Technology in Australia and one of the world’s most innovative roof designers, will share the challenges he faced in designing, engineering, testing, and overseeing the installation of the 860,000 square foot roofing system he created for the Dubai International Airport’s Concourse 2. The elliptical-shaped roof took nearly a year to complete and required more than 700 workers.

Rocco Romero, who specializes in investigation and repair design for waterproofing and roofing systems – including replacement projects at the Oregon State Capital in Salem, OR, and the Washington State Capital in Olympia, WA – will discuss the unique characteristics of dual sealed expansion joints in roofing and waterproofing applications
Hakim Elmahdy, PhD, of the National Research Council of Canada, Institute for Research in Construction, in Ottawa, ON, whose recent work includes directing joint Canada/U.S. research projects on window performance, will offer testing and simulation results from a major research project for the development of energy ratings for insulated walls
Edward Gerns, RA, LEED, AP, who has performed hundreds of investigations, assessments and repairs of building facades of all vintages and sizes, will examine the causes of corrosion and distress in skeletal frame skyscrapers and historic buildings consisting of steel assemblies and review methods of remediation, prevention and repair.
Leading building envelope manufacturers will exhibit new products and services during networking breaks. Over 200 building envelope professionals are expected to attend. Members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) earn up to 12 Learning Units, and all of the programs qualify for Health, Safety and Welfare credits. Attendees will also earn up to 12 Continuing Education Hours from RCI.
