MCA members, Umicore Building Products USA and ATAS International, along with Kenny Herman, Inc., donated material and services to assist with the construction of the new Fresnel Lens Building at the Fire Island Lighthouse, located on Fire Island National Seashore in New York.
In 1933, the First Order Lens was removed from atop the tower and was stored at the Franklin Museum in Philadelphia. The Fire Island Preservation Society has built a new facility for the original lens to return to Fire Island. The 1858 First Order Fresnel Lens will be on display as a learning center on the lighthouse.
Kenneth J. Herman, who developed the Corra-loc machine with ATAS to clad the Jet Blue Terminal, donated the design drawings and construction management for the project. Ken Rosner spear-headed the installation.
ATAS donated the time and expertise for producing the standing seam panels. UBP supplied the zinc coil, design consultations and installation.
“Fire Island is a uniquely shaped marine environment application,” says Erik Berg, former North American applications manager for Umicore. In order to achieve the longevity desired and to maintain the integrity of the beautiful gray aspect, proper detailing and installation was critical in restoring a national treasure.”
“When I visited the site, just the foundation was in place, but I was very impressed with the number of volunteers involved with the project,” says Dick Bus, president of ATAS. “The society plans to use it as a learning tool for kids and adults interested in U.S. history. The light was one of the lights ships used to guide them to the Statue of Liberty.”
