Housing Starts Report for July 2017, U.S. and Canada

The SBCA Structural Building Components Association has compiled the following data for the U.S. and Canada.

July housing starts (released August 16) decreased 4.8% to 1,155,000 units. Single-family starts decreased 0.5% to 856,000 units, while multi-family decreased by 15.3% to 299,000 units. Total U.S. permits, an indicator of future construction, decreased by 4.1% to 1,223,000 units (SAAR).

Starts decreased in 3 regions:

  • Northeast (- 15.7%)
  • Midwest (- 15.2%)
  • South (+ 0.6%)
  • West (- 1.6%)

Canada

July housing starts (released August 9) went to 222,324 units, increasing 4.4% from June (SAAR). Total urban starts increased by 5.5% to 206,122 units; total rural starts decreased 8.3% to 16,202 units.

Starts rose in 4 regions:

  • Atlantic Provinces (+ 36.6%)
  • Quebec (- 0.6%)
  • Ontario (+ 1.1%)
  • Prairie Provinces (+ 1.8%)
  • British Columbia (+ 19.7%)
