Housing starts and building permit data for Oct. 2017

SBCA (the Structural Building Components Association) has compiled the following October housing starts and building permit data for the U.S. and Canada.

U.S.

October housing starts (released November 17) increased 13.7% to 1,290,000 units. Single-family starts increased 5.3% to 877,000 units, while multi-family increased by 36.8% to 413,000 units. Total U.S. permits, an indicator of future construction, increased by 5.9% to 1,297,000 units (SAAR).

Starts increased in 3 regions:

  • Northeast (+ 42.2%)
  • Midwest (+ 18.4%)
  • South (+ 17.2%)
  • West (- 3.7%)

Canada

October housing starts (released November 8) went to 222,771 units, increasing 1.6% from September (SAAR). Total urban starts increased by 2.5% to 205,935 units; total rural starts decreased 8.2% to 16,836 units.

Starts rose in 3 regions:

  • Atlantic Provinces (- 27.7%)
  • Quebec (+ 20.3%)
  • Ontario (- 24.2%)
  • Prairie Provinces (+ 3.6%)
  • British Columbia (+ 43.7%)
