Housing Starts and Building Permit Data for U.S. and Canada, June 2017

The SBCA (Structural Building Components Association) has compiled the following June 2017 housing starts and building permit data for the U.S. and Canada.

U.S.

June housing starts (released July 19) increased 8.3% to 1,215,000 units. Single-family starts increased 6.3% to 849,000 units, while multi-family increased by 13.3% to 366,000 units. Total U.S. permits, an indicator of future construction, increased by 7.4% to 1,254,000 units (SAAR).

Starts increased in 3 regions:

  • Northeast (+ 83.7%)
  • Midwest (+ 22.0%)
  • South (- 3.8%)
  • West (+ 1.6%)

Canada

June housing starts (released July 11) went to 212,295 units, increasing 9.1% from May (SAAR). Total urban starts increased by 9.6% to 194,773 units; total rural starts increased 4.0% to 17,922 units.

Starts rose in 2 regions:

  • Atlantic Provinces (- 16.2%)
  • Quebec (+ 29.7%)
  • Ontario (+ 46.6%)
  • Prairie Provinces (- 12.5%)
  • British Columbia (- 18.7%)
