Going cordless with power to spare

Several new and exciting tools have come into our test shop recently.

• The first two are cordless 10.8V Lithium-Ion tools from Makita — compact cordless driver-drill (DF30DW) and impact driver (TD090DW).

Makita’s new compact tools combine pro power and pro speed with a compact design and are powered by a new 10.8V lithium-ion battery. These tools are also available in a two piece combo kit (LCT203W). Both are powerful, yet compact, cordless tools designed for maintenance professionals, repairmen, remodelers, electricians, cabinet installers and any general contractor seeking a compact cordless drill-driver with plenty of power.

The 10.8V lithium-ion compact driver-drill kit has a 1/4-inch hex driving shank for a wide range of fastening and drilling tasks. The Makita-built motor delivers 200 inch-pounds of torque with two speed settings (0-350 & 0-1,300 RPM), variable speed and 18 clutch settings.

The versatile and compact driver-drill weighs 1.9 pounds, includes an L.E.D. light to illuminate the drilling surface and an electric brake. It also features an armor-coated, non-slip, ergonomic grip for good control. The Makita DF030DW kit contains the compact cordless driver-drill, two 10.8V lithium-ion batteries, one-hour smart charger and hard carrying case. Suggested retail is $149.

The 10.8V lithium-ion compact impact driver kit has a 1/4-inch hex driving shank for quick bit changes and has 0-3,000 impacts per minute with a durable and long-lasting hammer/anvil design. The Makita-built motor delivers 800 inch-pounds of torque with a no load speed of 0-2,400 RPM.

This compact impact driver weighs just two pounds and has an L.E.D. light to illuminate the work surface as well as an electric brake to instantly stop driving. Like the driver-drill, this impact driver also features an armor coated, non-slip, ergonomic grip for good control. The Makita TD090DW kit contains the compact cordless impact driver, two 10.8V Lithium-Ion batteries, 1-hour smart charger and hard carrying case. Suggested retail is $159.

The Makita 10.8V Lithium-Ion 2 piece combo kit (LCT203W) includes both the 10.8V driver-drill, 10.8V impact driver, one smart battery charger, two 10.8V batteries and a custom fit metallic hard case. Suggested retail for this combo kit is $179.

Now there’s competition

• Duo-Fast Construction recently introduced a new cordless 20 degree round head framing nailer that is sure to compete with other cordless framing nailers on the market. This cordless framing nailer is ideal for applications from nailing joists and rafters to sheathing and decking, all without an air hose or compressor. It has a powerful motor that drives 2- to 3 1/4-inch fasteners. The sequential operation will drive two to three nails per second and up to 1,200 nails per fuel cell and up to 4,000 nails before the battery requires recharging.

The Duo-Fast Construction framing nailer is durable, reliable and designed to handle jobsite use day after day. It is surprisingly lightweight and well balanced with a weight of 7.6 pounds for less arm and wrist fatigue. It is also compact and fits between 16-inch on-center joists, studs and roof trusses.

The cordless 20° round head framing nailer also features the innovative Fuel+Nail Pack system. This system features packs of 1,000 nails plus one fuel cell, so the user never runs out of fuel. The featured nails are 20 degree round head paper tape collated in brite and hot dipped galvanized, in 2-3/8 to 3- 1/4 inch lengths and .113 to .131 shank diameters with 30 nails per strip.

Unlike plastic collated nails, paper collated nails mean no sting from flying plastic debris when firing, no waste because of breakage from being dropped before loading and no need to stop to clean up bits of plastic on the jobsite.

The Duo-Fast Construction framing nailer (Model 903000) comes with a rugged carrying case and includes a 6-volt rechargeable battery, 2-hour AC battery charger, safety glasses, a 5/32-inch hex key, quick reference and cleaning guide, operating manual, tool schematic and parts booklet. Fuel+Nail Packs are sold separately.

Available accessories, sold separately, include an automotive adapter to charge the battery and a no-mar work contacting element to avoid damaging work surfaces. Suggested retail for the The Duo-Fast Construction framing nailer is $389.

Cutting edge, literally

• Rarely do we see anything really new in saw blades but recently the patented Final Cut Saw Blade was introduced. The Final Cut Saw Blade has been called the ultimate cutting blade and it is ideal for woodworkers, carpenters, cabinetmakers, contractors and the serious do-it-yourselfer.

The 10-inch, 40 carbide tooth blade features 100 grit sanding discs on each side of the blade that allow it to cut and sand the work piece at the same time. Each cut produces a fine, double-sided finish that eliminates the need for sanding. Because of the unique design, the Final Cut Saw Blade reduces kick back and eliminates binding and heat build up for longer blade life.

“Everyone in this industry has been taught that the more teeth a blade has the better the cut is,” says Dave Perrey, a fulltime contractor and inventor of the Final Cut Saw Blade.

“The Final Cut blade does not rely on the teeth to finish the cut, so the number of teeth can be greatly reduced. The abrasive disc is actually wider than the blade kerf, therefore the stock is cut by the blade and sanded by the disc.”

Designed for cross cuts and rips on soft and hard materials with a table saw or miter saw, the Final Cut Saw Blade produces precision cut joints and fine finished edges every time. The user can also remove more material by simply sliding the work piece towards the spinning blade, much like using a disc sander.

As a rule, the life of the Final Cut Saw Blade depends on the type of material being cut. For example, if you are cutting 2-1/4 inch pine casing, the blade and sandpaper should last for about 2,000 cuts before you will need to resharpen the blade or replace the sandpaper. In many cases, simply changing the sandpaper discs will enable you to make fine cuts, even with a dull blade.

The Final Cut Saw Blade, Model FCD1040, currently comes in a 10-inch size with 40 carbide-tipped teeth and 5/8-inch bore. Suggested retail is $74.95. A 12-inch blade will be available soon. A variety of replacement sanding discs are also available and are easy to install.
