Contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and schools built before 1978 must now be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.

A ruling by the EPA in April 2008 set the initial deadline for certification at April 22, 2010, but later extended the deadline to September 30, 2010. By that date, contractors who perform renovation work must be enrolled in an approved certification program. Certified renovators must undergo an eight-hour training course from an EPA-approved training provider to follow lead-safe work practices, including:

    •    Containment of the work area
    •    Minimization of dust
    •    Thorough clean up

The rules were created because common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips by disturbing lead-based paint, which can be harmful to adults and children.
