The SBCA has published the following information regarding October housing starts and building permits data for the U.S. and Canada.
United States:
October housing starts (released November 17) increased 25.5% to 1,323,000 units. Single-family starts increased 10.7% to 869,000 units, while multi-family increased by 68.8% to 454,000 units. Total U.S. permits, an indicator of future construction, increased by .3% to 1,229,000 units (SAAR).
Starts rose in all regions:
- Northeast (+ 44.8%)
- Midwest (+ 44.1%)
- South (+ 17.9%)
- West (+ 23.2%)
Canada:
October housing starts (released November 8) went to 192,928 units, decreasing 12.1% from September (SAAR). Total urban starts decreased by 12.2% to 176,131 units; total rural starts decreased 10.9% to 16,797 units.
Starts rose in 1 region:
- Atlantic Provinces (- 33.9%)
- Quebec (- 92.4%)
- Ontario (+ 20%)
- Prairie Provinces (- 10.8%)
- British Columbia (- 44.9%)
