WoodWorks announces Wood Design Awards

WoodWorks, a cooperative venture of major wood associations and organizations throughout North America, recently announced award-winning design projects. The awards recognize designers, firms and/or projects. Eight categories were open to submissions: institutional wood design; commercial wood design; interior beauty of wood; green building; innovative wood design; traditional use of wood; wood behind the walls; and engineering.

The following winners were recognized:

EAST REGION (Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.)

In addition to the main eight categories, an extra category was added in the East Region to honor a unique project that caught the eyes of the judging panel: jury’s choice.

  • Commercial Wood Design: Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith Education Center in Charlottesville, VA

    The Institutional Wood Design Award for the East Region was given for the Bishop's Chapel at Roslyn Retreat Center, Richmond, VA.

  • Engineering: Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater in Washington, D.C.
    Architect – Bing Thom Architects; Engineer – Fast + Epp; Contractor – Clark Construction Group, LLC
  • Exterior Use of Wood: Covington Farmers Market in Covington, VA
    Architect – VA Tech School of Architecture + Design; Engineer – Draper Aden & Associates; Contractor – VA Tech School of Architecture + Design
  • Green Building: Bosarge Educational Center – Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, in Boothbay, ME
    Architects – Maclay Architects, Scott Simons Architects; Engineer – Becker Structural Engineers; Contractor – Bensenwood

Winners of East Region Wood Design Awards were recognized at the Atlanta and Baltimore Wood Solutions Fairs in February 2012, which attracted more than 750 engineers, architects, general contractors, developers and others from throughout the Eastern U.S.

The Green Building Award in the Central Region was given for the Mead Wildlife Area Education and Visitor Center.

“The creativity of this year’s projects was fantastic,” said Pat Schleisman, P.E., regional director for WoodWorks in the eastern U.S. “It’s great to see so many designers finding innovative ways to use wood while at the same time bringing wood’s benefits—such as cost-effectiveness, renewability and sustainability—to bear on their projects.”

Winners of Central Wood Design Awards were recognized at the Irving, Texas Wood Solutions Fair in December 2011, which attracted more than 400 engineers, architects, general contractors, developers and others from throughout the Midwest. WEST REGION (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

  • The Commercial Wood Design Award for the West Region was given for the Central Oregon Community College Jungers Culinary Center.

 “The caliber of this year’s submissions was outstanding overall,” said Bryan Schuyler, Regional Director of WoodWorks in the western U.S. “The jury had a challenging decision to make in nearly every category and we couldn’t be more proud to recognize such an innovative group of design professionals.”

Awards were presented at the Long Beach Wood Solution Fair on February 29. Award winners from Oregon and Washington were also recognized at Wood Solution Fairs in Portland and Seattle on March 13 and 15 respectively.
