The metal roof on this home was long overdue.
The homeowner wanted to install metal when this Stillwater, Minn., house was built 18 years ago, but decided to save some money and went with asphalt shingles. This past winter, he took care of that final touch.
The old shingles had run their course, according to Troy Jensen of Diversified Metal Roofing in Elk River, Minn. “The 3-tab shingles, there was some serious curling in some areas,” he says. “They were at the age when they just had to be replaced.”
The 4,800 square foot job took about 3-1/2 weeks — about a week longer than it should have, but it was installed in December and January when snow and cold weather prevented the Diversified crew from working a few days. The homeowner chose the Edco Products Enhanced Shake in Hartford Green. The Enhanced Shake is a new product from Edco, boasting lighter and darker tones that complement the base color. Hartford Green is one of four blended colors available in the Enhanced Shake.
“It’s kind of a neat story,” Jensen says. “The individual who owns this home is originally from Pittsburgh and his father worked a long time for Bethlehem Steel. He always had a steel roof growing up and that’s what he wanted. He sees the value in it.
“The first thing was the aesthetic appeal and the second thing was the longevity. He really liked the look. He liked the shingle look better than the standing seam. It would have been a lot of long runs with a standing seam roof and he thought the look of the horizontal shingles breaks up the look. And I agreed with him.”
Jensen says the homeowner is pleased with his metal roof and glad he finally was able to install it.
